New August 2018 -This document sets out a 15-year plan to strengthen languages in education in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Our vision is a multilingual Aotearoa New Zealand where:

By 2020, all Year 1 students are learning te reo Māori in schools.

By 2033 all high school graduates will be able to converse in more than one language

In December 2017, COMET Auckland supported the Auckland Languages Strategy Group to send a post-election Briefing to the Incoming Ministers whose responsibilities are relevant to language diversity.

The briefing outlines the value that language diversity can bring to social and economic development and summarises key data and current issues affecting languages in Aotearoa New Zealand.  It also recommends quick-win actions that could bring significant gains.

The Auckland Languages Strategy - Ngā Reo o Tāmaki Makaurau aims to develop a shared agenda for a multilingual Auckland, aligning policy and practice to support, promote and foster all the city’s diverse languages and cultures.

The document was developed by a cross-sector group representing a wide range of language interests in Auckland.

The strategy was launched in November 2015.

The Auckland Languages Strategy was launched at a conference, Ngā Reo Maha, Ngā Reo Rere - Shaping a Multilingual Auckland,  on 27th November, 2015 in partnership with the Office of Ethnic Communities.
